Product Description

Smart 16/4 CardBus Mk2 is a 32-bit PC Card adapter for 16/4 Token Ring applications that offers PCI-like performance for portable PC users connected to the corporate network. It supports the latest power management initiatives and has wide driver software including Windows XP, 2000, 95, 98 and NT4, DOS, OS/2, Linux and Apple OS for Powerbook PCs.

Madge introduced the world's first Token Ring CardBus adapter in November 1997. This second generation product builds upon this experience to offer improved functionality including:

  • 100% Madge TR chipset
  • Ring-speed detection
  • Windows NT point enabler
  • Apple Powerbook support
  • Linux driver support
  • ACPI power management

These advances make the Smart 16/4 CardBus Mk2 adapter easier than ever to integrate into existing networks. CardBus Mk2 is supported by Madge LSS LAN Support Software (LSS), the latest version of which is available for WWW download. LSS provides intuitive documentation, utilities and Madge UniDrivers for all common operating systems (including Windows XP, 95, 98, NT, 2000 etc, NetWare, DOS and OS/2). Additional driver support is also available that allows CardBus Mk2 to be used with Linux systems and Apple Powerbook laptops.

CardBus Mk2 is compatible with the latest laptop PCs and supports automatic detection and selection of the following network parameters:

  • 4 or 16 Mbps ring speed
  • UTP cable type
  • STP (IBM Type 1) using optional converter (3650 4854)
  • STP (9-way D type) using optional cable set (70-09)
  • Full-duplex (DTR) or shared Token Ring connection

Updated network drivers, including fully signed and certified drivers for Microsoft Windows operating systems, can be downloaded direct from www.madge.com/software.

To ensure compatibility with the latest specification notebook and laptop PCs, CardBus Mk2 supports a number of industry initiatives, including the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), Desktop Management Interface (DMI 2), and Microsoft's PC97, PC98 and PC99 design guidelines. This enables the adapter to be used with remote PC management applications such as Microsoft "OnNow". Furthermore, CardBus Mk2 can be configured to support promiscuous mode, for network diagnosis and analysis applications. For added network security, this option can be disabled, if required.

CardBus Mk2 builds on the reliability record of previous Madge PC Card products, including GoCard 3221, Smart PCMCIA, and CardBus Mk1. It features the same robust offset connector and cable and is supported by Madge LSS that provides common driver technology that supports both Madge PCI and PC Card adapters.

CardBus Mk2 offers excellent investment protection, as it is architected around latest generation Madge ASIC technology. This means that ongoing supply and support of the product is not constrained by the discontinuation of common 3 rd party Token Ring processors.
